Mark Baggley: Mr Freake

Mark was born in 1960 in Hull and grew up in Scunthorpe. Mark went to his local primary school and then was sent to a residential special school in Lincolnshire at the age of eleven. From there Mark went on to a residential special college in Coventry.

Brumby Junior, yes I was there four years between seven and eleven. Really good time, to be honest with you. The first year it was amazing cos I had a teacher called Mr Freake and he arranged a day trip to Cleethorpes and the school said I couldn’t go because I would slow the class down too much and Mr Freake, and this was about 1967, said if I didn’t go, he wouldn’t take the class, which looking back was very brave of him, I suppose, at that time. And his grandma had a wheelchair and he borrowed the wheelchair, so I could go. But then I spent most of the day, from what I can remember, on his shoulders, going round. So I was really sort of proud of him really, looking back. I think there’s teachers nowadays who wouldn’t do that and I think to do that, at that time, was pretty good of him, really.
