Mavis was born in 1940 in Fulham, London. She attended a local special school from age five to age sixteen and from there went on to a job with the Gas Board.

I can remember we had a party, we must have had, like a little Christmas dinner or something like that every year, and one year, I don’t know if it was the Americans or the Canadians, sent oranges and we all had an orange each. And that was fantastic ‘cause nobody knew what oranges were.
