Tara Flood: Something Terrible


Tara was born in 1966 in Preston, Lancashire. She was sent to a residential special school in East Sussex at just sixteen months of age and remained there until she was sixteen. She then returned to Preston and attended a local mainstream college.

Here Tara describes the attitudes her mother experiences in the hospital after giving birth and the impact of those attitudes.

But they were very clear when I arrived that she must have done something terrible. In fact I think they’d said to her, ‘You must have done something terrible in your life to have given birth to …’ And I was held up apparently in front of her. So at that point she had a breakdown and then was heavily sedated for however long – I don’t know, two or three days after I was born.
