Esther Annenberg: Sweetheart

Esther, known as Etty, was born in 1909 in Upton Park in London. Etty went to Venetian Road Special School in Camberwell, London from the age of five, going on to an apprenticeship in dressmaking at Holdren's department store in Peckham. At the time of interview Etty was 104 years old.

Here Etty describes making friends.

I had a boy there, he was my sweetheart.. He used to bring me sweets every day. He used to leave them on the desk. I used to say to my mum, 'I got a sweetheart at school' so she said 'Oh, bring him home to tea' and I said to him, 'My mum wants you to come home to tea'.
'Oh I can’t do that.' I said, 'Yes you can. Why can’t you do it?' He said, 'My mum won’t let me'. I said, 'Why’s that?' He said 'Cos she don’t like you'. I said, 'Well I’ve done nothing to her'. He said, 'I know that' he said, 'but she can’t help it'.
