Choosing School

Tara Flood: School at Sixteen Months

Tara was born in 1966 in Preston, Lancashire. She was sent to a residential special school in East Sussex at just sixteen months of age and remained there until she was sixteen. She then returned to Preston and attended a local mainstream college.

Here Tara talks about the decision to send her away to school aged just sixteen months.

The alternative was residential special school here in the UK, which I went to when I was sixteen months, which is still fantastically young. And again, a while ago I managed to retrieve a whole load of my notes from school for particular reasons around my health and found within it some descriptions of who I was as a child when I arrived, and I think I was described as being emotionally disturbed at sixteen months, which I think – isn’t it interesting that you can describe a sixteen month old baby essentially as being emotionally disturbed?
