Simone Aspis: Negative Self Image


Simone was born in 1969 in Dollis Hill, London. She went to a residential special school in Cheshire from the age of four until sixteen. From there she went on to college and then university.

Here Simone recalls her negative self image due to being segregated.

So school was for me the time was about, you know, hiding the fact you are a disabled person and trying to fit in and be normal when actually in order – because I had a very bad -- had a very negative image of myself and disabled people because of being segregated. I didn’t feel great about myself being at that school, I’d kind of felt very negative because you were always, you know, told, you know, ‘cause when you’re segregated, you know, there is a clear message that you were not wanted by the community.
